Unite Scotland Care Sector

MSP Pledge
Picture
Unite will shortly be asking MSPs to sign the pledge outlined below in support of Scotland's Care Workers

We the undersigned recognise the vital role that Scotland's carers who are mostly women, undertake on a daily basis to care and protect the most vulnerable in society. This pandemic has not only shown the truly heroic work done by our carers but exposed many failings in the way they are treated.

Widespread privatisation, low pay, poor terms and conditions and lack of professionalisation of this skilled service has led to a revolving door of carers exiting private and third sector organisations and exposed the urgent need for these issues to be addressed.

We back the call from Unite the Union and the recommendations of the Fair Work Social Care Report which calls for urgent interventions to address these areas of grave concern and that this cannot be achieved without the Scottish Government providing clear leadership to this sector and driving an agenda to eradicate once and for all the endemic problems inherent in the care sector.

We believe this can only be achieved by working with unions and leaders across social care to  improve standards across the whole sector and for a move to national bargaining that will  deliver Fair Work for the dedicated professional workforce providing much needed improvements in the professionalization of the service, workers' rights and their terms and conditions to enable a truly world class care service to flourish that we can all be proud of.

Our carers go above and beyond daily to provide care and during this pandemic have put themselves on the front line.

We support the following :
  • The establishment of sectoral and national bargaining for all carers not covered by existing and agreed bargaining processes to ensure that standards are met and every carer receives the best pay and conditions.
  • The development of a professional skilled user responsive National Care service to oversee and regulate the sector and ensure the highest standards are met and kept in the sector
  • That a body be formed involving stakeholders including client groups, trade unions, employers, local government and Scottish Government with a clear mandate to drive through the changes necessary to make the care sector in Scotland the envy of the world.
By signing this pledge I support the campaigns aims and declare 'I care for our carers'.
